Watchtree Nature Reserve Welcomes a Supersized Great Crested Newt Sculpture by Renowned Chainsaw Artist Tom Smith
Watchtree Nature Reserve is thrilled to introduce a stunning new addition to its landscape—a magnificent Great Crested Newt sculpture, skillfully crafted by acclaimed chainsaw artist Tom Smith of WoodSmith Carving.
The sculpture, inspired by The Adventures of Flash and Iris, a Tale Trails story, brings the character of Flash to life in spectacular form. This incredible piece was carved from a 300-year-old oak tree that fell during a storm in 2024. The tree, generously donated by a local farm, has been transformed into an awe-inspiring work of art that will delight visitors for years to come.
Tom Smith, a highly respected chainsaw artist from South Cumbria, was invited by Watchtree to create this unique piece, merging his exceptional artistic skill with the rich storytelling of The Adventures of Flash and Iris. Flash, now immortalized in wood, will soon take up residence at the Reserve, where he will serve as a focal point for visitors, sparking curiosity and inspiring future artistic and conservation efforts.
This sculpture forms part of the ongoing Adventures of Flash and Iris project, which aims to engage visitors with the natural world through storytelling and art. In the coming months, additional pieces may join Flash.
Visitors are encouraged to keep an eye out for Flash in his new home at Watchtree and admire Tom’s incredible craftsmanship. Despite his supersized form, Flash is a friendly soul! Copies of The Adventures of Flash and Iris are available for purchase at the Watchtree Visitor Centre or can be downloaded HERE.
