In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the world slowed down and families sought fresh air and freedom, Laura mum-of-four stepped forward with a simple, powerful idea: make the outdoors easier to enjoy.
That woman was Laura Earl, founder of The Hiking Household – a walking website and charity that’s helped thousands of families rediscover the magic of the Cumbrian countryside. But today, Laura’s journey has taken a turn she never expected — and it’s only deepened her passion for helping others get outside.
From Trail Guide to Trailblazer
Just 36 years old, Laura was, in her own words, “the most active person you could meet.” With a nursing background and an enviable stamina for both motherhood and miles of footpaths, she lived and breathed outdoor life with her husband Daniel and their four children.
But in September 2023, Laura received a devastating diagnosis: a brain tumour. In April 2024, she underwent surgery to remove the tumour. The operation was successful in many ways, but left her with serious complications, including a bleed on the brain, facial palsy, months of tube feeding, and lasting mobility challenges. She now uses a scooter to get around.
Rather than retreat, Laura has responded with remarkable courage and clarity.
“It’s quite ironic that I spent years getting people outside and active — and now I’m facing all the barriers many of them quietly live with every day,” Laura shared.
Her experience has opened her eyes to the invisible difficulties faced by people with disabilities. “It’s not as easy as just lacing up your trainers,” she said. “Sometimes, getting the right equipment costs thousands. And that’s just not an option for many.”
Championing Change, One Frame Runner at a Time
Determined to level the playing field, Laura has begun campaigning for more accessible outdoor activities, especially those involving movement, mobility, and fun.
Working closely with Active Cumbria, she’s secured funding from Sport England to purchase RAD RaceRunners — specialist adaptive running frames that allow people with limited mobility to experience the joy of movement.
“Being active shouldn’t come with a price,” Laura says. “But the truth is — it often does. We need more awareness, and we need support to make it better.”
What Is a RaceRunner?
Also known as a Running Frame or Frame Runner, the RAD RaceRunner is a three-wheeled mobility aid that allows people to run or glide with support. It’s not just for competition — it’s for fun, freedom, and inclusion.
They’re especially beneficial for individuals with:
Whether used for rehab or recreation, Watchtree’s traffic-free trails are perfect for giving these amazing machines a go. We already have a growing, informal running group on Sunday mornings – maybe thanks to Laura, our informal 5k sunday run will gain the interest of those that have thought it would be impossible.
From Setback to Inspiration
Throughout all this, Laura has remained a shining example of hope, strength, and grace. With her scooter, her smile, and her children often in tow, she’s showing us all that adventure doesn’t end with a diagnosis — it just changes shape.
“Even though I wish this wasn’t happening to me,” she says, “it is. So let’s get on with it — and be the best we can be.”
From navigating accessible walks with benches to advocating for basic improvements like automatic doors in public spaces, Laura is proving that small changes make a world of difference.
And she’s not done yet.
