Nurturing a Haven

The Newstead family, who owned the land for more than 60 years, used the fields primarily for grazing their fell ponies. Over that long period, they had just three ponies, and since the last one passed away a decade ago, the land has been managed gently — cut for hay once each summer and deliberately left without chemical fertilisers or pesticides. This light-touch stewardship has created a perfect canvas for wildflower meadow restoration, as nutrient-poor soils support a greater variety of native species. 

Much like the habitats found across the boundary at Watchtree, the old concrete runway and aprons have transformed over the years into a surprisingly diverse ecological niche. As the concrete slowly erodes, it mimics the qualities of limestone pavement, forming cracks, crevices, and warm microclimates that attract an array of rare plants and butterflies. These unexpected habitats are part of what makes the site so ecologically valuable. 

The Watchtower itself already supports wildlife in abundance. Swallows return to nest inside each summer, and there is clear evidence of barn owls roosting on the first floor. A resident buzzard is frequently seen perched proudly atop the structure, surveying the fields below — much like the RAF lookouts of the 1940s, though relying on natural instinct rather than binoculars. 

Encircling the field is a network of wild, overgrown hedgerows and scrub, many sections having matured into full-grown trees. These untidy edges are vital for wildlife, offering shelter, food sources, and movement corridors between habitats. They provide a rich buffer zone where woodland, meadow, and open field meet — a natural mosaic that supports everything from insects to small mammals and songbirds.
