Watchtree’s Visitors Centre include fully serviced toilet facilities – however the rest of the reserve is challenged for running water and sewerage. We have overcome this by creating a ‘compostable toilet’ – situated adjacent to the John Muir Hut, on the eastern perimeter of the reserve.

The compost toilet is sustainable in that it is a dry, waterless toilet, similar in appearance to a usual toilet other than it doesn’t flush! Once the waste is periodically removed, natural processes enable it to be broken down over a period of time to produce useful compost.
